Charing occurs as little village inside England at the foot of the North Downs. These are sited on the pilgrims way & is 1 day's hike from either Canterbury. Its best known building is the Archbishop's Palace, which is very original although also in a very dilapidated state. A Palace was an crucial building in the diocese of Canterbury counting amongst its guests King Henry VIII. It has been the farmhouse for the survive 300 years.Around 2004, a palace featured in the BBC television programme 'Restoration' in which a total of expected restoration projects throughout the UK competed for funds. Unluckily, Charing was unsuccesful although much of local & regional interest was raised following of a programme & a village is affirmative that the palace, will eventually, become rebuilt.
In the mid Nineties, the satiric newspaper, 'A Charing Examiner' appeared which gently guy at two a village & its dweller. On the back of the 'paper' the total of unique fund-raising cases were organised. A 'Le Lapin 500' was an exciting raceday in which at home-built boxcarts competed down Charing's steeply-sloping High Street & in which, to the disbelief of 2000 spectators, The Red Arrows flew above the length of the course.
a Charing Examiner Awards Nights were held around a 5,500sq foot marquee & poked gentle fun at the glossy London affairs. It were fronted by John Altman, Nick Cloth of 'Eastenders'. All over a 4 years of a Charing Examiner, about £10,000 was raised for each the Fire Brigade Benevolent Fund (there is a superb maintained fire brigade in the village) & comedian Dave Lee's local charity for toddlers - Sunshine Holidays
which will bring respite vacations for babies & parents within Kent.
